Job Description

Performs mowing weeds in road rights-of-way and noxious weed spraying. May perform heavy-duty truck driving duties. May assist with seasonal operations, i.e., Equipment repair, maintenance, snow removal.

Works under the direction of the Weed Supervisor and/or Director.

Operates weed mowing and spraying equipment; identifies and eliminates noxious weeds.

Maintains records on spraying and chemicals used by using computer application programs for record-keeping, mapping, and report generation of daily spray activity; ability to operate a GPS to track weed infestations and spray areas.

Performs operational maintenance on vehicles and complex spraying equipment; checks fuel and oil levels, tire pressure, water level, anti-freeze, and similar requirements; services equipment as necessary and assures lubrication is performed on a routine basis; assists mechanics with repairs on vehicles by performing minor mechanical adjustments.

Drives heavy trucks and trailers to haul equipment or material.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Utah Driver's License.
  • Must possess a Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL). or obtain one within 3 months of hire.
  • Must possess a non-commercial Pesticide Applicators License or obtain one within 3 months of hire.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Some knowledge of weed control practices and techniques; some knowledge of herbicides and their properties; ability to identify noxious weeds.

Some knowledge of mechanics; working knowledge of road conditions and their effect on driving practices; some knowledge of laws pertaining to the operation of heavy vehicles and spraying of chemicals for the eradication of noxious weeds.

Skill in operating a variety of heavy-duty trucks; skill in controlling and handling trucks with heavy loads under a variety of road and traffic conditions; ability to control vehicles under all circumstances; skill in using various hand tools.

Some knowledge of safety equipment necessary for handling and applying chemicals.

Ability to use tools and equipment, including computerized and mechanical weed sprayers and chemical handling equipment, rough cut mowing equipment, common hand and power tools, shovels, mobile and portable radio, personal computers and software applications, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and phone.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees; ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Performs ninety percent (90%) of the work outdoors and at various job sites; regularly works in outside weather conditions.

Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.

Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

There may be exposure to extreme weather conditions, noise elevation, and high levels of dust, grime, and dirt. Dust level is usually high. Odors are often pungent.

Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or moves up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee is required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
