  • Administrative license, Evaluator endorsement, and Teacher license with special education endorsement; or Special Education Director license
  • Criminal background check required for hire P.L. 101-630, P.L. 101-647, and the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
  • Valid Iowa driver's license

Responsibilities

The Director of Special Education serves as a member of the Educational Leadership Team. This Director provides leadership, management, supervision, evaluation, coordination, and direction of all special education programs and services for students with disabilities aged 3 to 21. Responsibilities include strategic professional development, creating and managing budgets, monitoring compliance to meet state and federal mandates, and supporting equitable evidence-based practices and programming for academic growth and achievement, social-emotional learning, and behavior management within a multi-tiered system of support framework.   • Using a continuous improvement model, monitor the effectiveness of special education programming and provide guidance to the building administration, superintendent, and senior staff on necessary programmatic changes and expectations to ensure increased student achievement and social-emotional learning for students receiving special education
  • Communicate effectively with staff, principals, superintendent, parents, agencies, facilities, districts, and the Bureau of Indian Education
  • Support and engage with the Central Rivers Area Education Agency
  • Work with the transportation director and the technology coordinator to develop services for eligible individuals
  • Ensure that special education students' records are properly maintained, and provide records and information for outside agencies
  • Prepare and submit the special education department's budgetary requests and monitor the expenditure of special education funds
  • Assume major responsibility for the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluating special education teachers and teacher associates
  • Allocate and assign equitable FTE distribution for special education programs
  • Supervise the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Extended School Year (ESY) each summer
  • Supervise and coordinate committees selected to review, revise, or develop special education curriculum
  • Oversee reporting and compliance, including preparation and submission of all reports and data for federal and school monitoring of special education
  • Serve as Gifted & Talented Education Director and 504 Coordinator: complete reports; arrange all necessary training; coordinate assessments; verify and update data in NASIS (Infinite Campus)
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and retain qualified staff
  • Manage conflict resolution, including consultation, facilitation, and mediation within the district
  • Perform other duties as assigned
