JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:

GI Technician (GI Tech)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. The GI Technician is the health care team member who is responsible in assisting with the care of the patient and the overall operation of the facility. The GI Technician is responsible for the sterilization and disinfecting of the instruments and the endoscopes used in endoscopy.

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

  1. Assists with greeting, admitting, and discharging patients to and from the facility.
  2. Assists the physician and staff nurses as needed and requested. Assists in pulling required instruments, supplies and equipment.
  3. Preparation of room or work area, room turnover, between case cleaning, and terminal cleaning.
  4. Orders medical-surgical supplies and assists in restocking.
  5. Assists with keeping area neat and orderly.
  6. Assists with insuring that all equipment in the area is prepared, tested, and in good working order.
  7. Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes all surgical and endoscopy instruments and equipment.
  8. Assists the receptionist in all areas of her job as needed and requested. Monitors/assists the receptionist with the Medical Records system.
  9. Assisting with planning and organizing procedures each day.
  10. Placing enzymatic solution with the appropriate amount of water in the ultrasonic cleaner in the morning for use in the sterilization and disinfection process.
  11. Change disinfecting solutions according to the manufacturers protocol.
  12. Test the disinfecting solution to assure it's efficacy according to the manufacturers guidelines daily.
  13. To make sure all cleaning supplies are present and functioning properly. To keep a back up of all supplies.
  14. To set up the rooms for procedures in the morning and during the day. Each scope will be working properly and ready for patient and physician use. If scope is not working properly, please set aside to send off for repair. Repairs are to be sent off the same day or the next day.
  15. Able to take biopsies, handling the biopsy forceps as trained. Able to handle the polypectomy snares.
  16. Able to set up and turn on the Heater Probe and Bovie.
  17. Assisting with overall care of the patient as requested by the physician, Director of Nurses, Administrator, or staff nurses.
  18. Initiate and/or assist with cleaning, sterilizing, disinfecting, inspection, and care of surgical and procedure instruments and equipment.
  19. Practicing effective cost reduction techniques.
  20. Identifying problem areas and assisting in the resolving of problems.
  21. Developing positive interpersonal relationships and communication skills with physicians, staff, patients, and facility guests.
  22. Participating in fiscal service and utilization studies and activities.
  23. Participates in special Endoscopy checks.
  24. In conjunction with the Infection Control Nurse, keeps records of the different reprocessing quality measures as documentation of meeting Infection control guidelines during the reprocessing process.
  25. Keeping the daily refrigerator logs and keeping a record of the disinfection test strips check.
  26. Any unusual condition or changes in the patient are reported to the R.N.
  27. Assists in the orientation of new employees.
  28. Attends and participates in meetings, in-services, committees, etc.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Nurses Aide training with certification. (May have been grand fathered in).
  3. Training on the job.
  4. CPR certification.
  5. Yearly in-services on Fire/OSHA/Hazardous Materials/Infection Control/Safety.
  6. Monthly in-services and departmental meetings.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Completion of six-week orientation and on-the-job training program as established by endoscopy requirements for employment.
  2. Hospital experience preferred.
  3. Prior GI Tech experience preferred.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Ability to distinguish colors and shading.
  2. Exposure to possible hazardous materials/conditions and infectious diseases on the unit.
  3. Frequent telephone calls and other interruptions, which requires being able to handle a fast-paced work environment during entire time at work. Must be able to prioritize multiple projects. Must maintain strict confidentiality and exercise professionalism when interacting with staff, managers, supervisors, physicians, external customers, etc.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

  1. Fine motor skills, bending, stretching, sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs while on duty.
  2. May require lifting of 50 to 100 lbs.
  3. Possesses personal qualities such as kindness, empathy, understanding, respect, good judgment, integrity, loyalty, a sense of humor, and an ability to relate to people in a humanistic manner while working in a stressful environment.
  4. To be drug/alcohol free.
