General Description:
The Senior Director of Major Gifts is an experienced professional and strategic planner who will help advance the organization’s mission; guide the organization’s philanthropic, corporate, and individual giving fundraising strategy; foster and maintain philanthropic relationships; and manage philanthropic reporting.  This individual will be the subject matter expert for the organization’s philanthropic endeavors and will build programs and processes, and assemble a team focused on philanthropic efforts for the organization.Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities of the Job:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the design and implementation of multi-year funding plans that support stewardship strategies supporting giving campaigns, major gifts planning, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain a centralized target list of 150+ major gifts prospects and contacts for foundation and corporate general fund at the $100,000+ level.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism in donor interactions.
  • Work collaboratively with marketing  and leadership to develop key messaging associated with funding raising efforts.
  • Effectively communicate the impact and outcomes of major gifts to donors.
  • Provide updates to executive leadership and board members regarding major gift fundraising efforts.
  • Ensure all major gift activities comply with relevant laws and ethical standards.
  • Manage systems that track and cultivate donors and prospects and track and produce reports on philanthropic activities and metrics with a high degree of accuracy and analyze data to segment donors and tailor fundraising strategies accordingly.
  • Ensure revenue budget goals are met and recommend corrective actions to close any projected gaps.
  • Reconcile philanthropic fiscal records with the finance team on a monthly basis.
  • Work with finance and leadership to develop and implement a legacy giving program.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Job Requirements:

  • General understanding of fundraising, events management, and volunteer management
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, data processing software and internet
  • Experience partnering with marketing teams to develop content for social media.
  • Excellent project management and time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals
  • Ability to be flexible and multi-task
  • Broad network of community contacts, events, and local social conventions
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds easily
  • Reliable transportation
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, business, or related field of study.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising with a focus on major gifts.
  • Proven track record of successfully securing major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Experience working with high-net-worth individuals and corporate partnerships.
  • CFRE (Certified Fund-Raising Executive) certification or similar credential preferred.
  • Preferred experience includes a minimum of 1 – 2 years of experience in a philanthropic department in a non-profit setting.
  • Experience with donor base management.
