Minimum Salary: $124,467.20 MidPoint Salary: $155,584 Maximum Salary: $186,700.80

At the Port of Seattle, we anticipate making salary offers between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. Offers will be based on experience similar to the Port job being applied for as well as a review of pay rates for Port employees performing similar work. Salary ranges are under review and subject to change. 

Some of what you'll be doing:

As the Fire Protection Engineer Manager, you will represent the Fire Department as the Fire Code and Life Safety Official in planning and coordinating the operation of the Fire Department Engineering Staff to ensure public welfare, health, safety and quality of life at the Seattle Tacoma International Airport.

  • You will provide direction to the Fire Protection Engineering Department and act as a liaison and advocate between the Fire Department Engineering team and upper management in the Aviation Division and at the Port for resources needs, suggested policy changes and general organizational objectives.
  • You will enforce State Building Code, STIA building code, RAC amendments and federal regulations pertaining to construction and formulate Standard Operating Procedures to clarify the permit process and increase efficiency for staff and customers.
  • You will evaluate new construction methods and development, and document the final interpretations on code applications, including approving or denying modification requests to existing infrastructure and approve changes to Port Standards related to the questions and issues presented.
  • You will interact with the Commission and Executives in the construction code development adoption processes, responding to significant customer complaints, providing overviews of division operations and when pushing through code initiatives, or service changes requested by Commission or Aviation Director’s Office.
  • You will meet regularly with Building and Fire Department Division Leads to discuss progress on major initiatives/goals directed at improving service delivery and establish customer service, quality, and code enforcement expectations for the Division.
  • You will coach and council staff on their performance and complete performance evaluations for Leads and staff.
  • You will participate in the development of department’s budget and monitor revenues and expenditures to assure expenditures are within budget and revenues are within forecasted amounts.
  • You will coordinate with Aviation Maintenance on the installation, troubleshooting, replacement and operation of Infrastructure, Fire Protection and Life Systems and equipment.
  • You will conduct presentations to the upper management, Commission and Executive of major modifications and upgrades needed from infrastructure systems to satisfy changes and growth at the airport.
  • You will represent the Port in national, state and regional development in the area of building code development, sustainability, asset management and other programs under consideration and as assigned by the Aviation Directors Office.

Who you are:

  • Experienced – You have seven (7) years of experience in fire protection engineering with some experience in design and system review on capital projects valued over one million dollars, including three (3) years of experience leading others.
  • Educated – You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • Desired – We hope are an ICC Certified Fire Marshal or have a Certified Building Official certification. We hope you are an NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist with an additional ten (10) years of experience with five (5) years directly related to aviation/airports.

You are skilled in planning, organizing, reviewing, and evaluating the work and deliverables of other professional engineers/architects.
  • Organized – You possess strong analytical/organizational skills with the ability to manage and supervise multiple complex projects and staff simultaneously to ensure proper integration and continuity across multiple personnel/departments.
  • Knowledgeable – You are skilled in budget development/administration and in assessing opportunities to implement strategic changes in process and procedures through the continuous improvement process and innovation. You can perform appropriate fire/life safety risk analysis and develop engineering/technical reports and contingency plans for unexpected problems that can have a significant impact on assigned programs or airport operations.
  • Effective Communicator – You possess effective and clear communications skills with the ability to present complex engineering concepts, provide expert opinions, and guidance about codes and construction at airports and the airport environment to a wide variety of technical and non-technical audiences.

What else you need to know:

  • Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to project sites.
  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible schedules are available at the Fire Chief’s designation. You may be required to work during emergencies.
  • Work Environment – This role will be in a hybrid working environment with a minimum of two days in the office per week, in accordance with the Port's Flexible Work Arrangement policies. You may be potentially exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
  • Grade Review – The pay range and grade for non-represented positions are under review and subject to change as part of the Port’s work to implement a new pay program. This review is intended to ensure that positions are aligned with the new program that will be implemented in early 2024.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance. In compliance with Federal and State laws as the successful candidate, you will be required to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) criminal history background check.
