Job Description

Job Summary:

An Estimator is responsible for assessing the costs associated with construction projects. This role involves analyzing project requirements, collaborating with various stakeholders, and preparing detailed estimates. The Estimator plays a key role in supporting the bidding process, ensuring competitiveness, and contributing to the overall success of construction projects.

Specific Duties:

  • Prepare estimates of probable costs of materials, labor and equipment, and subcontracts for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications.
  • Advise on tendering procedures, examine and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards and conduct negotiations.
  • Establish and maintain tendering processes.
  • Set up cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures.
  • Prepare cost and expenditure statements and forecasts at regular intervals for the duration of a project.
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors.
  • Liaise, consult and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, and prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
  • Manage and co-ordinate construction projects and prepare construction progress schedules.
  • Review plans and architectural drawing; prepare quantity take-offs on assigned projects.
  • Ensure a complete review of plans and drawings. Identify items that have been omitted and ensure appropriate accounting for such items in the overall estimate package that represents the full scope of the project.
  • Solicit subcontractor bids for assigned projects. Obtain 3-5 bids for each trade and supplier group. Review and analyze bids for conformance to project specifications, price, material, quality, insurance, wages, and related items. Discuss and resolve any questions with subcontractor prior to submission of final estimate.
  • Maintain current information on trends in and changes to existing construction codes to ensure complete bids from subcontractors and material suppliers.
  • Utilize appropriate software to provide optimal job performance.
  • Assemble the estimate including general conditions, special conditions, insurance and bonds.
  • Develop a working knowledge of material unit costs, systems square foot costs and total building square foot costs.
  • Assist in putting together proposals and bid packages.
  • Attend Presentations when needed.
  • Ability to work with clients and maintain relationships.
  • Function as part of a team

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field.
  • Previous experience as an Estimator in the construction industry is beneficial.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Proficiency in construction estimating software and tools.
  • Knowledge of construction materials, methods, and industry trends.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
  • Familiarity with relevant building codes and regulations.
  • Strong development of estimating, communication, financial, analysis, budgeting, purchasing, negotiating and computer skills are required BIM is a plus.
