Parks & Recreation Service Worker III
$17.76 per hour, Employer Paid Health Insurance, Retirement, Paid Time Off

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Responsible for managing daily tasks as provided by the Parks and Recreation Superintendent. Must be skilled and able to act on behalf of the Superintendent in his absence.  Responsible for the repairs and maintenance of the city parks, ball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and all other recreational facilities. Required to participate in all City sponsored special events.  Accountable to and works under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Acts on behalf of the Superintendent in his absence, communicating with the Parks & Recreation Director and directing personnel.
  • Maintains city parks, ballfields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and all other city recreational facilities.
  • Manages all daily tasks as provided by the Superintendent.
  • Performs heavy manual labor such as digging, lifting objects or equipment, spraying, painting, repair of irrigation systems and other manual labor.
  • Operate vehicles and powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, chain saws, backhoes, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.
  • Mow or edge lawns using power mowers or edgers.
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls.
  • Maintain or repair tools, equipment, irrigation, or structures, such as buildings, greenhouses, fences, or benches, using hand or power tools.
  • Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
  • Properly maintain sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, and other grounds features.
  • Works occasionally on weekends, nights, holidays, and special events.
  • Minor facility maintenance: assembling, installing, or repairing wiring, electrical orelectronic components, pipe systems, irrigation systems, plumbing, painting, machinery, or equipment.
  • Position may be designated mission critical.
  • Performs other related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of all equipment, tools, and supplies required to complete projects.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and repair and maintenance methods.
  • Knowledge of team leadership and working towards the completion of common goals & objectives.
  • Ability to operate lawn equipment.
  • Ability to operate large and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to communicate and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interact with the public and co-workers in a courteous, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Ability to think critically and provide solutions to problems as they arise.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING, & EXPERIENCE):
  • High school graduate or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required.
  • Two (2) plus years’ experience in lawn maintenance or similar work-related field.
  • Supervisory or Team Lead experience preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATION, OR REGISTRATION: 
  • Valid Class “B” CDL Florida Driver’s License required or attained within one year of hire
  • Florida Pesticide Applicator License preferred or must be obtained within one year of hire
  • Failure to maintain required certifications may be cause for termination.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: 
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without a hearing aid)
  • Requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, standing, squatting, and use of all manual and electric tools required to complete all work assignments.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work in an outdoor environment and occasional nights and weekends. Wears common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats, or life jackets as necessary.
