Job Description

New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) Scarborough office is currently seeking a Full-Time 32 HR 4 day a week Solid Tumor Oncology Patient Assessment RN. The Oncology Patient Assessment Nurse plays a crucial role in providing Coordination of care through communication and collaboration. with the care team. This position combines clinical expertise with compassionate patient interaction to assess and manage the healthcare needs of oncology patients and their families. The Patient Assessment Nurse serves as the first point of contact for patients seeking assistance or guidance between appointments, ensuring that patients receive timely and appropriate care.

As the assessment nurse your role will be to manage incoming patient calls and determine appropriate next steps while utilizing oncology-specific knowledge to evaluate the severity of symptoms and determine the appropriate course of action in a timely manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers to assist with patient scheduling and coordination of care.
  • Receive patient telephone calls and intervene appropriately for that patient's specific needs promptly. Alert physician as needed to patient needs that require physician intervention.
  • Maintain patient care standards and assures that patient care functions, such as assessment, treatment, and documentation are completed safely and effectively.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with all physicians, employees, and vendors.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, in-services and continuing education programs, national and regional professional organizations, and community-sponsored programs specific to Oncology and Hematology.
  • Incorporates evidence-based research into clinical practice and provide recommendations on practice clinical policies and processes to practice Directors
  • Coordinate patient care responsibilities within the scope of the practice for licensed and unlicensed health care providers.
  • Demonstrates respect for the life, dignity, and rights of all persons.

Travel: Rare.

Weekends: Occasional; this position will participate with other nurses in the weekend urgent care coverage rotation. 4-5 times per year.



Qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in nursing required. Licensed Nurse within State of Maine required.
  • Two years plus nursing professional experience required
  • ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Certification required within 6 (six) months of hire.
  • Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) preferred, required within 1 year or when eligible based on ONCC criteria.
  • Prior experience in oncology nursing or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Compassion and empathy for patients and their families.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
  • Willingness to adapt to changing healthcare practices and technologies.
