The Veterinary Technician’s primary role is to support and assist the doctors of the hospital. The Veterinary Technician assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgeries, immunizations, euthanasia as well as client education, marketing and inventory maintenance. This position requires a working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment and prevention, and other basic preventative health care recommendations. The Veterinary Technician assists the doctors to the fullest possible extent to help improve the quality of care given to the patients and to aid the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work. We are looking for a strong technical skill set with the ability to multitask in a fast paced environment. Teamwork and encouraging a positive culture are vital requirements of the candidate. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Performs all duties in accordance with government regulations and hospital policies and procedures.
• Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas while ensuring efficient flow of appointments and procedures.
• Assists the doctor in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthetics; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
• Gives injections and administers oral medications.
• Assists in restraining pets when necessary.
• Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis and runs tests using internal IDEXX blood analysis machines. Ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
• Takes diagnostic radiographs and performs EKGs.
• Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders. Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; post operative home care instructions; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
• Understands usage and dosage for commonly used prescription drugs including heartworm preventative and prescription flea control products and can readily explain them to clients.
• Understands usage and purpose of commonly administered vaccinations and can readily explain their necessity to clients.
• Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room stocked and prepared for surgery.
• Maintains an appropriate inventory of all drugs and medical supplies, stocks exam rooms and treatment areas as needed.
• Assists other staff members as required.
• Performs other duties as determined by the doctors.
• Prepares estimates for clients.
• Weekend work required.
• Expected Pay $15.00 - $27.00 - Compensation will be based on experience
