Job Description
CLASSIFICATION PURPOSE
Protects the health, safety, and welfare of animals in Miami County through monitoring and enforcing Ohio Animal Laws.  Assists in maintaining the Miami County Animal Shelter through daily Animal Control Officer duties.

JOB DUTIES
Under general direction, conducts door-to-door residential checks for valid dog licenses, observes, seizes, and impounds animals (e.g., lifts, loads, transports, and unloads animals), receives calls and complaints regarding stray, hostile, injured, or sick animals, communicates with the general public and with co-workers.

Interprets and implements animal control laws, observes violations and issues warnings and citations, presents testimony in court, investigates claims regarding damage to livestock and assists claimants in completing necessary documentation.  Administers injections to animals, administers methods of euthanasia upon passing state certification class for injection of euthanasia by following approved methods and utilizing approved equipment.

Performs custodial tasks involving physical labor and use of equipment (e.g., scraper, hot water hose, squeegee, broom, disinfectant chemicals, etc.), lifts and moves feed bags, litter bags, animals, supplies, and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, assists other employees in lifting heavier weights, provides food and water to animals in the shelter.

Prepares accurate and concise reports, issues dog licenses, files and retrieves records, collects fees, answers questions from general public.  Answers phones, performs other various clerical tasks.

Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

Demonstrates regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.

Skills in transcription, use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and equipment operation of standard office equipment, including but not limited to telephones, calculators, copiers, and fax machines.

MINIMUM CLASS QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT

Completion of four (4) years of high school or equivalent supplemented by more than one (1) years’ experience or training in the control and care of animals. 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license.

Must possess a certification for injection of euthanasia, or obtain within one (1) year of employment. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May require the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Must regularly stand, walk, sit, drive, use hands to finger, handle, grab, restrain, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.  Employee is required to run, jump, climb, balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and must frequently lift and/or carry up to fifty (50) pounds on a regular basis and over one hundred (100) pounds on an occasional basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

Must be able to work with and be around dangerous animals where there is risk of bite.  Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, including but not limited to exposure to hot, cold, wet, icy, humid or windy conditions.

The employee is exposed to, must negotiate, use, or work with or in the vicinity of noisy operations or activities, compressed gases (air powered tranquilizer gun), flammable and combustible liquids (paint thinner, gasoline), eye and face protection due to potential exposure to flying objects (dipping animals), medical and first aid (bites), portable fire extinguishers, handling material and supplies (includes mechanical handling equipment, the manner in which things are stored, and housekeeping), laundry machinery and/or operations, blood and other bodily fluids (animal blood), and hazardous chemicals (cleaners, disinfectant, bleach).  The employee uses or works in proximity to the use of firearms, and has contact or exposure to potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons, potentially vicious animals, and hazardous driving conditions.
