Veterinary Patient Discharge Technician

Reports to: Nursing Supervisor

Summary: To perform smooth and efficient inpatient discharges for all hospitalized, surgical, and specialty patients. Provide clear client communication at discharge and ensures a positive experience for all clients after their stay at our hospital.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure take home medications are filled and discharge instructions printed for client
  • Check for discrepancies between discharge note, doctors note, and medication label
  • Check all medications before patient leaves for accuracy
  • Make sure patient is ready for discharge (awake, clean, IVC pulled)
  • Ensures all patients go home with their belongings, organizes patient belongings while in hospital
  • Effectively explain different types of home care instructions and answer client questions
  • Demonstrate home physical therapy exercises
  • Explain and demonstrate bandage care, drain care, incision care, diabetic care, and subcutaneous fluid administration to ensure client understanding and follow through
  • Answer phone calls from owners regarding discharge instructions, medications, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy of veterinary patients
  • Knowledgeable of different medications including dosage, usage and side effects
  • Works in conjunction with staff to keep the day flowing efficiently.
  • Ensures all treatment room space and cages in the treatment room and wards are clean at the end of the night.
  • Experience and Education:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with doctors and nursing staff
  • High attention to detail
  • Professional and calm demeanor
  • Great organizational skills
  • CVT preferred but not required
  • 1+ years experience working in a Veterinary Primary Care practice required
  • ome experience assisting in surgery or recovery of post operative patients

Physical Requirements: This job is physically active and requires frequent bending and standing for long periods of time. It requires routine lifting and restraining animals. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs regularly.

Staff Management: Professional and Support Staff

  • Mentor and work with departmental staff to ensure an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect.
  • Track performance reviews, maintain employee files including writeups, med errors, and training milestones for respective departments
  • Assist staff where necessary and foster an educational environment.
  • Collaborate with HR and Managers to select qualified staff for the department (i.e. working interviews). Perform interviews for respective departments
  • Proactively identify solutions to overcome unexpected volume, delays, staffing shortage, etc.
  • Coach leads in the department regarding expectations and performance and lead by example
  • Work Collaboratively with designated managers as needed to assist with disciplinary and Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) within departments.
  • Expected to help enforce hospital policies while on the floor and act as an example for the rest of the staff, regardless of department.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • 5+ years working as a veterinary technician.
  • Associate Degree, Veterinary Technician.
  • CVT or LVT required or successfully obtain certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Experience in a supervisor or lead role preferred.
  • May be required to additional hours beyond regular clinical work schedule to accomplish the duties of the position.
  • Occasional weekends and holidays required.

  • Compensation is based on experience and skill level. Full-time benefits include Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance; CE Allowance: 401k; Paid Time Off; Uniforms; and discounted veterinary care.
