Job Description

JOB TITLE: Optical Associate

LOCATION: All (Pueblo, Trinidad, Cañon City)

DEPARTMENT: Optical Dispensary

REPORT TO: Optical Supervisor

FLSA STATUS: Full Time, Nonexempt, Hourly

SUMMARY: The Optical Associate will provide the highest levels of quality, care, and professionalism to the patients and customers of Rocky Mountain Eye Center in the selection, measurement, and fitting of eyewear that best suits all their visual and fashion needs. The primary role of the associate is to learn on-the-job, with training materials, resources, and direction from the Optical Supervisor and other ABO Certified Opticians to become ABO Certified.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures that every patient visiting Rocky Mountain Eye Center is given friendly and professional service through every interaction.
  • Interprets basic eyewear prescriptions written from Ophthalmologists and Optometrists in an accurate manner and recommends lens technology and frames.
  • Accurately measures, fits, and adapts lenses, lens treatments, and frames.
  • Professionally assists patients with the selection of frames that complement their fashion style, functional needs, facial anatomy, and prescription.
  • Accurately and timely processes orders to internal/external labs; and collects payments from customers.
  • Submits claims and authorizations to third-party payors and collects and posts patient responsibility payments with little error.
  • Must be able to safely and correctly operate Lensometer, Pupilometer, frame warmer, lens clock, PD/mm ruler, Tracer, Edger, Tint unit, Polisher, Ultra Sonic Cleaner, and various precision hand tools.
  • Must be able to assemble, dissemble, and repair eyewear frames of all material types and construction; as well as professionally assess when frames cannot be repaired safely and correctly.
  • Must be able to quality control, troubleshoot, research, and propose optical solutions to patients, family members, doctors, and/or management.
  • Inputs patient and prescription data accurately into the software system.
  • Inspects eyewear products upon receipt and prior to dispensing to patients.
  • Develops professional business relationships with other team members, inter-divisional staff, and external parties (frame and lens vendors).

  • Conforms to all RMEC policies and procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook including punctuality, attendance, and dress codes.
  • Achieves cooperation and teamwork through effective communications and positive relations with staff.
  • Adheres to the company code of conduct.

WORK QUALITIES

Position requires excellent communication skills and an understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care. Must demonstrate attention to detail and documentation. Must be even tempered, ethical, and good humored. Must interface with all RMEC departments, physicians, and personnel.


REQUIRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years’ experience with point-of-sale software preferred.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a customer service and sales environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize efficiently in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, drug screen, and Office of Inspector General (OIG) Exclusions Database Search.
  • Must be able to travel to other office locations as needed.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to carry and lift items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to speak clearly in small group settings.
  • This position will require sitting for long periods of time, walking, standing, bending, and walking, as well as using fine motor skills, such as finger dexterity for typing, and using small hand tools.
  • This position could be exposed to loud noises, frequent phone conversations, and requires average to above average visual acuity and hearing.
  • Most of this job will be spent indoors in a climate-controlled environment.
  • Must be available to travel to other office locations as needed.

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary Range: $14.42 to $17.34 an hour
