Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Scheduler is responsible for planning and scheduling the production of goods in Thorne’s manufacturing facilities. This includes developing and maintaining production schedules, coordinating with production staff, and ensuring that production goals are met. This includes Scheduling of materials and production at outside contract manufacturers

FLSA STATUS: The U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires employers to classify their employees as being either exempt or non-exempt for the purpose of being paid overtime wages. The essential duties of this job are such that the employee is classified according to the FLSA as an EXEMPT employee.

RESPONSIBILITIES – Satisfactorily performing and/or achieving the following Responsibilities are essential duties of the job.
  • Revises production schedules when required due to design changes, labor or material shortages, backlogs, or other interruptions.
  • Collaborates with management, quality, marketing, sales, production, and process engineering.
  • Distributes production schedules and or work orders to departments.
  • Monitors sales, early warning data, operations plan, the master schedule, and the customer order backlog.
  • Measures and monitors actual performance against the plan to identify changes, trends, short term deviations and/or forecast errors.
  • Monitors potential capacity problems, planned orders vs. actual orders and plant customer delivery performance to Sales and Operations groups.
  • Develops and generates capacity plan for short and long term.
  • Responsible for Scheduling of materials and production at outside contract manufacturers.
  • Monitors materials and component availability to ensure planned schedule can be executed.
  • Establishes processes and management disciplines to assure planning and scheduling assumptions are continuously updated to reflect current business requirements and operations capabilities.
  • Records production data, including volume produced to keep schedule accurate.
  • Plans production commitments or timetables for business units, specific programs, or jobs, using sales forecasts.
  • Monitors the back-order report and at-risk report and collaborates with supporting departments to ensure all expediting is met.
  • Actively participates in required training and development programs, and support colleagues, trainers, and management as appropriate with these efforts.

EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES / PROFICIENCIES – Satisfactorily achieving and/or meeting the following Experience, Competencies, and Proficiencies are essential duties of the job:

  • Experience and/or Education: By training, education and/or experience, employee must be able to perform the essential duties of the job. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; advanced degree preferred. Experience with FDA, ISO and/or cGMP standards preferred. Working knowledge of production sequencing preferred. APICS certification desirable.
  • Reasoning Ability: Employee must be able to evaluate the proper balance of quality, cost and production output to make good decisions, yet be able to take the decision to a higher level of management when the risks to compliance, quality, cost and production are significant.
  • Computer and Technical Skills: Employee can use the equipment and software required to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.
    • Employee must become knowledgeable in Good Manufacturing Practices.
    • Strong Microsoft suite skills – Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.
    • Displays strong sense of urgency and ability to prioritize tasks effectively
    • Fundamental understanding of production processes, with an emphasis on inventory management. Working understanding of warehouse, shipping, and order entry systems.
    • Develops and delivers on assigned objectives within requested timeframes.
    • Builds, develops, motivates, and engages highly performing teams and work cross-functionally.
    • Possesses good interpersonal skills and engages others in a positive manner.
    • Possesses strong attention to detail.
    • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Raises issues and concerns promptly.
    • Documents and presents work in a clear and concise manner.
    • Works independently with minimal direction and oversight.

Physical Demands:

  • Being able to meet the Physical Demands of the job is an essential duty of the job.

    • Employees at Thorne Research perform the Responsibilities of their jobs in various manufacturing, warehousing, and administrative areas. The various departments at Thorne Research include Production, Operations, Quality, Accounting/Finance, Medical Affairs, Administration, Information Technology, Maintenance, Engineering, Customer Service, and Sales.
    • Must be able to work and entire 8-hour. Must be able to work in a stationary position as well as move about unassisted. Must be able to hear and converse with supervisors and other employees. Must be able to work in a moderate noise level environment, under warehouse and manufacturing conditions that require good eyesight and hearing to maintain personal safety around moving manufacturing equipment, forklifts and manufacturing carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employee must be medically fit for respirator usage.
