POSITION TITLE:  CERTIFIED SURGERY TECH/LPN 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The FBC Surgery Tech is responsible for various duties and tasks unique to the Family Birth Center. Provides unit support under the direct supervision of an RN. This individual assists at the surgical field passing instruments and supplies to other members of the surgical team. Acquires supplies, prepares, and equips the surgical suite. Provides unit support through the requisition and stocking of supplies, maintenance of equipment, and other duties as directed. The position is an integral part of the team approach to family centered care and performs those tasks that contribute to the smooth and efficient flow of patients through the department. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Promotes efficient department operation by demonstrating teamwork, efficiency and initiative

  • Takes initiative to identify and solve problems, seek areas for improvement, contribute new ideas, support team goals.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, maintains open communications, look for opportunities to assist co-workers.
  • Prioritizes and completes duties within appropriate time frames; accepts projects or additional duties willingly.

Promotes efficient department operation by maintaining a safe, clean, well stocked environment

  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for cleaning and maintaining all unit equipment and supplies in ready to use condition and designated levels; following procedure when repair, replacement or restocking is required and follows up until cleaning, stocking, repair or replacement issues are resolved.
  • Ensures all areas of unit are in a clean and orderly condition; patient care areas are ready for new patients at all times.

Demonstrates competence in assisting health care team members provide patient care

  • Correctly sets up equipment for delivery table, newborn warmer and special care nursery beds.
  • Supports RN and physician staff in the provision of emergency care, anticipating potential situations and needs.
  • Demonstrates understanding of surgical procedures, instrumentation and equipment. Sets up table, instruments, equipment and supplies for operative delivery/procedures. Maintains aseptic technique and sterile environment.
  • Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon and use of instrumentation, sutures, sponges and supplies. Follows procedures for safe use of medications on the surgical field. Performs correct sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  • Coordinates and assists with activities for quick, efficient turnover and set up of operating room. Restocks operating room after use, and checks the room once each shift to ensure that all equipment and supplies are ready for use.

Demonstrates professionalism during all levels of interaction

  • Maintains effective relationships with patients, families, visitors, supervisors and all health care team members.
  • Answers telephone calls, patient call lights and the doorbell promptly and courteously. Takes accurate messages and follows up on requests for assistance in a timely manner.
  • Utilizes time efficiently with unit related activities. Does not make or receive personal telephone calls while on duty except for emergencies.
  • Consistently maintains appearance and dress standards in accordance with policy. Wears name badge at all times.
  • Observes mandatory requirements. Attends at least 75% of staff meetings per year.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Minimum Requirements 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Completion of Surgical Tech Program or grandfathered; flexibility and strong organizational skills; excellent communication and customer service skills; excellent prioritization and follow through skills; ability to function professionally in urgent or emergent situations.

PREFERRED:

One year previous Obstetrics or Surgical experience; training in aseptic technique and environmental cleaning.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

Medium to heavy physical demands.  Ability to stoop frequently, reach from floor to overhead level occasionally, push/pull up to 100 pounds frequently, lift up to 50 pounds. Work under daily stress and constant time demands.

PAY RATE:  $29.69 - $43.93
