Our Environmental Sector delivers comprehensive environmental solutions to meet the full project lifecycle needs of clients in renewable energy, oil & gas, transportation, and manufacturing industries. With one of the largest multimedia air and land permitting and compliance teams in the country, we support client success in manufacturing and industry, liquids delivery and processing, natural gas storage and delivery, power generation and delivery, and transportation projects.

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

TRC is seeking a Senior Biologist / Wetland Scientist / Ecologist (full time) to join our Permitting, Planning and Licensing Practice. The successful candidate will report to our Concord, CA office and will be involved in a wide variety of CEQA, energy and infrastructure related projects (including electric transmission, renewable energy (wind/solar/battery storage), as well as transportation and other development projects.

Remote options are also available for candidates living in the Bay Area or Sacramento Area of CA.

 

Preference will be given to applicants with listed species permits (or working towards permits), the ability to conduct wetland delineations and aquatic wildlife surveys, rare plant surveys, as well as other diverse biological field work. The applicant should also have an ability to identify plant species commonly found in the Northern California region and able to collect accurate data in the field and produce professional reports in the office. The successful candidates will also be able to understand site plans, and GPS and GIS technologies.

 

Preference will also be given to applicants that have experience working on energy and transportation projects involving CEQA and NEPA, Clean Water Act permitting programs, and other local, state and federal permitting programs. Successful applicants will be able to interact in the field with clients, contractors, and environmental agency representatives.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS

 

  • Support energy and transportation projects involving wide array of state and federal permitting programs
  • Conduct wetland delineations and functional assessments
  • Conduct general and protocol level aquatic wildlife surveys (e.g. Giant Garter Snake, California Tiger Salamander, Red-legged frog, fairy shrimp), rare plant surveys, as well as other diverse biological field work
  • Responsible for identifying plant species commonly found in the western U.S. (California), and should be able to collect accurate data in the field and produce professional reports in the office
  • Responsible for research, writing memorandums, technical reports and sections of the environmental documents
  • Perform well with supervision and have familiarity with reviewing site plans, and GPS and GIS technologies
  • Abide by Company policies and procedures
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Physical, Environmental, and Mental Requirements

This job consists of office work and field work. The employee will either spend the entire day in the field or in the office.

 

Field Work: The employee drives to customer/client sites, walk outside during weather and high temperatures (can be above 100 degrees F). Walking on paved surfaces (asphalt) and unpaved surfaces such as forest, tall grass, gravel, and steep slopes. Must be able to work up to 10 hours per day, which includes a combination of driving, standing and walking. Must be able to access remote locations on foot with steep inclines, high temperatures, and other adverse weather conditions.

 

Office Work: The employee will perform professional level work requiring the application of principles and practices of a wide range of administrative or technical methods in the solution of administrative or technical problems; applies general understanding of operating policies and procedures to solve complex administrative problems; requires ability to work under stress and to meet deadlines with a continuous, close attention for accurate results.

 

Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus in use of computer monitor and other manual, task-related functions.

 


Requirements
  • Excellent data collection, technical writing and communication skills
  • Knowledge of common plant and wildlife species, soil types, and hydrology
  • Permits for federally and/or State listed species
  • Solid understanding of erosion and sediment control, best management practices commonly implemented during construction, and familiarity with construction of energy and/or transportation-related projects
  • Flexibility to travel
  • Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resources, or related field
  • Approximately 5 years of post-degree experience conducting general and protocol level field surveys, wetlands delineation and permitting, permit compliance monitoring and/or inspections for construction projects
  • Experience performing field work in California required
  • Certified Wetland Scientist (highly desired)
  • Certified Wildlife Biologist (highly desired)

 

Compensation:

In accordance with California state law, the following compensation range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition: $75,000-$100,000.  Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors.
