Position Purpose: To coordinate and implement an individualized plan of care for each surgical patient using the nursing process, practicing within their scope, standards, policies, values, and mission of the organization.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

Position Specific Performance Expectations:

  • Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care plans based on patient assessment to optimize outcomes and maximize available resources while functioning as a Pre Admission Teaching RN.
  • Performs and documents accurate initial assessment per unit standard which may include: initial observation, obtaining and interpreting information in terms of the patients' needs, safety, discharge planning, psych/social/cultural, family needs, multi-system physical assessment, patient/family level of knowledge and readiness to learn about disease process and care requirements. Reports appropriate information in a timely manner to responsible provider.
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
  • Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
  • Identifies barriers to effective communication based on psychosocial, literacy, financial, and cultural considerations.
  • Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
  • Effectively delegates patient care to ancillary personnel. May precept student nurses and new hires.
  • Employs critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced environment, and take appropriate action.
  • Adheres to AORN (Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses) standards, ASPAN (Association of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses) standards and recommended practices and all policies of MRH and Surgical Services department.
  • Consistently ready and prepared for assigned patients.
  • Ensures Perioperative Patient Verification is complete (H&P present, informed consent signed, test results present, surgical site identified, etc.) before patient is taken into surgical suite.
  • Appropriately responds to the patient in an emergency situation demonstrating emergency interventions following Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support algorithms, policies and procedures.
  • Gives through report of patient's preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative condition as indicated to receiving nurse (Intra-Operative, Post Anesthesia Care Unit - PACU, Day Surgery, Medical/Surgical Unit, Special Care Unit, etc.)
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Completes annual education, training, in-service, and licensure/certification requirements; attends departmental and organizational staff meetings or reads meeting minutes.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated timeframes.
  • Establishes and maintains effective verbal and written communication and good working relationships with all patients, staff and vendors.
  • Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self-motivated; manages activity and time.
  • Actively participates in departmental and facility performance improvement and continuous quality initiatives.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age (21 for driving positions)
  • Must be able to legally work in the United States
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and breath alcohol test (if applicable)
  • Must complete employee health meeting


Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Unencumbered RN License - Colorado or Compact State
  • Current American Heart CPR Certification
  • ACLS - required within 1 year
  • PALS or ENPC - required within 1 year
  • TNCC required within 1 year


Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years hospital nursing experience preferred
  • Previous OR experience preferred

Position Classification: Non-exempt

Compensation Range: $34.01 to $51.02
