Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

Provide technical leadership in design implementation and maintenance for IBM mainframe z/OS and z/VM operating systems environment and all the mainframe vendor products that are used for supporting Customer environment, Vanguards Production, Quality Assurance and Development mainframe environments. Reporting to the MS manager, the Sr. z/OS System Programmer is responsible for maintaining the external/internal z/Servers environment, which primarily includes: keeping the operating system and program products at their most current level, performance and tuning, debugging and troubleshooting system related issues, and providing technical support to the Customer, Quality Control and Application development community on mainframe systems.

The candidate must have expert knowledge and hands-on experience, working with the latest generation of IBM mainframes, and the more recent releases of the z/OS operating system. The candidate must also provide expert guidance to the application development community and the data center operations staff, in all areas of operating systems functionality, as well as mainframe program products usage. Knowledge of DB2 and/or CICS installation, configuration and administration is a plus.

Working externally/internally with other departments to achieve the business objectives of Vanguard. Designs, develops, installs, configures, and maintains mainframe operating and infrastructure systems (e.g. OS upgrades and patches, database management systems, application integration & communications, storage, etc.) as well as installed third-party systems components to ensure reliability in accordance with user needs and technical specifications. Recognizes and troubleshoots problems with hardware and operating systems and assigned third-party software running on an IBM Mainframe system. Establishes and documents standards and procedures (including disaster recovery procedures) for management review. · Conduct internal needs assessments of technical environment to ensure the maintenance and efficient operations of Vanguard’s technology infrastructure.

· Coordinates installation of hardware and software by others required to support the mainframe community in Vanguard and Customer sites.

· Support internal and external customers by participating on request and incident resolution. Take ownership and responsibility for resolving complex business application issues and mainframe infrastructure issues.

· Manage own ticket queue within communicated standards in order to maintain quality of provided service.

· Proactively monitor applications/systems based on alerts performance and monitoring.

· Understand, evaluate critical issues, system failures, identify root cause and workarounds

· Installs and maintains hardware and software, including z/OS, z/VM, DB2, CICS,TN3270,TASID, WLM, TCPIP, VTAM, etc.

· Communicates and coordinates network schedule, backups, and downtime to users.

· Prepares and maintains documentation of mainframe configurations.

· Troubleshoot and resolve all corporate information technologies issues as they relate to mainframes.

· Collects requirements for data, configure solutions and reports on deliverables, capacity and resource planning, as requested.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Education, Skills and Abilities

· IBM z/OS System Programming (in general ~ 7-10 years’ experience)

· IBM z/OS System Programming (z/OS v2.3 and higher specific - within the last 2-3 years)

· SMP/E (System Modification Program/Extended) skills

· Expert with ESM (RACF, ACF2, TSS)

· Sysplex configurations

· System Managed Storage (SMS) experience including Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) and Removable Media Manager (RMM)

· Configuration and monitoring of IBM z/PDT, Virtual Tape System (VTS)

· IBM WebSphere Message Queue (MQ) v8+

· DB2 DBA experience a definite plus

· CICS installation, configuration and administration

· WLM performance management

· UNIX System Services, Time Sharing Option/Interactive System Productivity Facility (TSO/ISPF) and Job Entry System 2 (JES2) skills

· Minimum of 10 years related experience as a IBM system programmer within a highly dynamic enterprise environment or related experience.

· Enjoys collaborating with internal, external partner teams, customers and vendor/consultants.
