Position Summary: The Lab Materials team provides support for science labs in biology, physics, chemistry, geology, agriculture, and horticulture.

While each member of the team brings specific expertise to the team, all members support all labs, as needed. The Specialist will perform technical work in the operation and maintenance of the laboratory to ensure labs are adequately supported by participating in laboratory safety programs, maintaining laboratory schedules, preparing and standardizing reagents and solutions, maintaining chemical and equipment inventory, performing routine classroom cleaning and equipment maintenance, maintaining biological specimens and cultures, and handling biohazard and chemical waste. This position works closely with lab faculty and will mentor student employees Essential Functions: • Participate in the successful preparation and production of the science labs offered by the School Math and Science by reviewing the course schedules, lab materials lists, conducting experiments, participating in safety training, and disposing of hazardous waste. This includes but is not limited to the following: o Stage, breakdown, and store materials for teaching labs including, but not limited to:equipment, supplies, chemicals, glassware, and specimens o Prepare and/or standardize chemical reagents and solutions o Prepare microbiological culture media, reagents, and stains and maintain microbiological culture collection o Maintain autoclaves, incubators, ovens, thermocyclers, microscopes, and anatomical models o Calibrate, validate, or maintain laboratory equipment such as HPLC, GC, GC/MS, AAS o Set up and conduct chemical experiments, tests, and analyses, using techniques such as chromatography, spectroscopy, physical or chemical separation techniques, or microscopy o Compile and interpret results of tests and analyses o Direct or monitor other workers producing chemical products o Maintain a clean and organized classroom and stockroom facilities including, not limited to, cleaning and disinfecting counters, sinks, and floors o Clean and repair laboratory glassware • Train and assist student workers in laboratory and safety procedures • Participate in field trip coordination as needed which may include van reservation processes, driving vans (requires van driver certification), and attending off-site field trips to assist faculty. • Participate in training courses on lab safety, biohazards, and chemical waste storage and disposal • Maintain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) library • Organize chemicals in accordance with state and federal laws regarding the storage of chemicals • Track the use of consumable and non-consumable supplies for labs and maintain organized inventory • Identify and dispose of hazardous chemicals and biohazards in accordance with federal and state laws • Correct or report safety-related concerns to the appropriate authority • Convey by words and action the values expected by CWI Minimum Qualifications: • Must have a valid driver's license • Previous coursework in sciences or equivalent experience • BS/BA in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry preferred • Previous experience in media preparation and, microbial culture maintenance and identification (Microbiology) preferred • Previous experience in wet chemistry and analytical instrumentation such as HPLC, AAS, GC, GC/MS (Physical Sciences) preferred • Ability to lift 45 lbs. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS Within the lab environment, there is exposure to odorous chemicals, and the noise level is generally quiet but does vary based on activity.

May be required to lift chemical containers and laboratory equipment weighing up to 45 lbs.
