Job Title (Essential) Mental Health Therapist (Jail-Based) - RRJ Stafford Job Description
Provides direct therapeutic treatment services to mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, intellectually-disabled inmates of the regional jail. Work is performed under regular supervision and is guided by agency policies and procedures, facility policy and procedures, diagnostic guidelines and professional practices and including ethical standards related to client interactions, state and federal licensure and accreditation regulations and guidelines.

1. Conducts intake interviews, makes assessments and develops diagnosis and treatment plans.
2. Interviews individuals and provides problem solving and supportive therapy.
3. Provides crisis intervention services and risk assessments and facilitates transfer to more intensive treatment as appropriate.
4. Assesses needs to psychiatric services and facilitates referral.
5. Inputs psychological data to agency staff for individual placements, care and treatment.
6. Consults with agency treatment staff and representatives of other agencies or programs; makes referrals, and provides and coordinates individual case management services.
7. Performs educational and therapeutic services to restore competency to stand trial.
8. Prepares lesson plan and training materials for educational/treatment programming.
9. Compiles data, prepares and maintains case documentation including treatment plans, progress notes and periodic assessments.
10. Provides expert testimony in court and legal proceedings.
Position Status Full-time Required Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment and clinical management of the mentally ill emotionally disturbed population within a correctional setting and related individual, group and family therapy and counseling techniques and practices; thorough knowledge of the laws, legal procedures and judicial processes affecting treatment of incarcerated/detained individuals; considerable knowledge of individual management guidelines for Virginia; considerable knowledge of the laws and legal procedures relating to hospital admission; considerable knowledge of social casework management, including need assessment and supportive level counseling; ability to establish and maintain rapport with the individual population; ability to conduct effective interviews, observe, assess and record individual behaviors and functioning and develop treatment and service plans; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff of other private and public agencies and organizations; ability to confidently provide expert testimony in both oral and written formats; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to operate a vehicle; ability to function calmly in stressful situations; ability to prepare and maintain detailed records and prepare related reports.

Typical Education, Training and Experience:
Master's Degree in the Behavioral Sciences and some clinical work experience in the treatment of the mentally ill and emotionally disturbed populations.

License Requirements:
Licensed eligible in VA as LPC or LCSW required. VA Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
VA license as LCSW or LPC preferred
Physical Demands
Work involves high exposure to environmental conditions regularly posing a threat to personal safety such as the requirements to: interact alone with hostile, aggressive and often violent individuals and/or individuals having contagious diseases; occasionally lifts moderate weight boxes of program supplies
Shift Type/Hours Worked
M-F, 8 am - 5 pm
Salary $59,603 unlicensed/$64,761 licensed / $5,000 Sign-On Bonus EEO Statement
