What is the difference between a ramp agent and a baggage handler?

A ramp agent focuses on tasks in and immediately around the ramp, where they are more visible to passengers. The airport ramp—also known as the apron—is the part of the airport where planes are parked, refueled, and boarded by passengers at the gate. Baggage handlers focus specifically on managing baggage at all stages of the transportation process. Their duties include ensuring that the weight of each plane is balanced correctly, managing an air freight warehouse, operating a vehicle to transfer bags to and from planes, and handling mail and freight. Most agents are trained to perform in any of these roles, allowing the airport to shuffle staff around as needed. The primary qualifications for both positions include a high school diploma or GED certificate.
