An inventory specialist oversees merchandise and distribution, keeping track of inventory records and products. Inventory specialists work in businesses that handle merchandise. Careers exist in both warehouse and retail locations. General duties include inventory management such as performing routine counts of products and producing reports. Responsibilities can span equipment monitoring and budget tracking, as well. Physical skills such as heavy lifting are usually required, and experience in retail or customer service is helpful. For most inventory jobs, you need only a high school diploma. However, some companies may seek higher qualifications such as a degree in accounting, math, technology, or another field.
