What is an addictions counselor assistant?

An addictions counselor assistant works for a substance abuse counselor, interviewing new patients that may have a drug or alcohol problem, managing and scheduling appointments, and completing other duties as assigned. Assistants may need to take on additional responsibilities, like contacting rehabilitation centers and human service agencies on behalf of a patient. Sometimes an addictions counselor assistant meets with patients to ease the scheduling burdens on the addictions counselor. Since many people in this position are pursuing a career as a substance abuse counselor, qualifications often include an associate's or bachelor’s degree in psychology.
