What is a surveyor and mapper?

Career: Mapper

A mapper works with surveyors using various equipment and tools to create a map of an area. It is possible to obtain a position with just a high school diploma and hands-on experience, but earning a certificate or associate degree in GIS (geographic information systems) is advisable. There are also four certification levels available through the National Society of Professional Surveyors which would make you more valuable to a potential employer. Responsibilities include recording data with GPS, GIS, and CAD software. Teamwork is important, as is some measure of physical fitness as you often work outdoors and frequently shift locations. A surveyor has similar required qualifications, but must also have special state licensing such as the PSM license, and surveyors often record more detailed information.
