What is a phone operator?

Career: Phone Operator

A phone operator assists customers by transferring calls, providing information, answering questions, and logging data about incoming and outgoing calls. In a company that receives a large volume of calls, a phone operator may operate a private branch exchange (PBX) system, sometimes called a switchboard. The switchboard system enables the phone operator to manage several different calls with more accuracy and efficiency. A phone operator is central to company operations because they are often the first person that a customer speaks to. They can be found in large enterprise companies, hospitals, and colleges. Some may perform receptionist duties as well. Similar job titles include telephone operator, switchboard operator, call center operator, and customer service operator.
