What is a music coordinator?

A music coordinator is the supervisor of the music selection process for a production. They might work anywhere from a school music department to a Hollywood blockbuster. As a music coordinator, your primary responsibilities revolve around selecting a soundtrack or setlist that best matches the intended audience. Depending on the industry, your day-to-day might include researching relevant music, securing the rights to songs, and hiring composers to write original music for the soundtrack, all while sticking to a strict budget. Especially in smaller roles, you may also coordinate practices with your musicians or singers. In the film industry, your job may stretch from late pre-production to release, but you will complete most of your work after the filming is complete, during the sound editing process. While film and television might be the most glamorous roles, you can find positions with schools, opera companies, community theater groups, or orchestras. More than half of those in the field work with religious and civic organizations and similar venues.
