What is a dispatch coordinator?

A dispatch coordinator oversees the dispatching of vehicles, such as a delivery truck or emergency service unit. As a dispatch coordinator, your job duties include tracking where vehicles are and communicating information over your phone or radio system. If you work in emergency services, you’re responsible for answering calls and dispatching ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks to assist people. If you work in the trucking industry, you coordinate shipping orders, schedule routes, and may need to keep track of driving time to ensure safety regulations. Qualifications for this career include the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure as well as excellent multitasking skills. You should have at least a high school diploma or GED certificate, and certification may be required depending on your state.
