What is a resident?

Residents are medical doctors who have graduated from medical school and are undergoing specialized training in a particular field of medicine, such as internal medicine, surgery, or pediatrics. This training, known as residency, typically takes place in hospitals or clinics and lasts between three and seven years, depending on the specialty. During their residency, residents work under the supervision of attending physicians, gaining hands-on experience and gradually taking on more responsibility. Residency is a critical step in becoming a fully licensed and independent physician.
