What is a progressive care RN?

Progressive Care RNs, also known as Progressive Care Registered Nurses, are specialized nurses who care for patients whose conditions are not critical enough for the intensive care unit but still require close monitoring and advanced interventions. They typically work in progressive care units, step-down units, or telemetry units, managing patients with complex medical needs such as heart conditions, respiratory distress, or post-surgical recovery. Progressive Care RNs monitor vital signs, administer medications, coordinate with interdisciplinary teams, and educate patients and their families about ongoing care. Their role bridges the gap between general medical-surgical care and intensive care, requiring strong critical thinking and clinical skills.
