NORTHCOM, or United States Northern Command, is a unified combatant command of the U.S. Department of Defense responsible for homeland defense, civil support, and security cooperation to defend and secure the United States and its interests. Established in 2002, NORTHCOM covers the continental United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and surrounding waters up to about 500 nautical miles. It works closely with other government agencies and partners to respond to natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other threats to national security.
