What is a moa?

Moa were large, flightless birds native to New Zealand that are now extinct. They belonged to the order Dinornithiformes and included several species, some of which could grow up to 3.6 meters (12 feet) tall. Moa were herbivores and played an important role in the local ecosystem until they were hunted to extinction by humans around 600 years ago. Their extinction significantly impacted New Zealand's environment, including the loss of their primary predator, the Haast's eagle.
