How to become a yardmaster?

The primary qualification for becoming a yardmaster is a thorough understanding of the job. Most rail companies prefer to promote people into this position because existing employees already understand how their yard works, but some are willing to hire outside. Unlike many industries, you do not need a college degree to get this job, but you need to pass vision and hearing tests. Expect employers to look for three or more years of experience in the railroad industry and a history of providing hands-on leadership. Safety regulations are essential, so memorizing all relevant policies, including those from the Department of Transportation, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, among others, is a significant benefit.
