To pursue a career as a tool setter, you need a high school diploma or GED certificate and to complete an apprenticeship under the supervision of an experienced tool setter. To succeed in a tool setter job, you need knowledge of machine shop safety and guidelines and a willingness to undergo on-the-job training. A background in manufacturing, aerospace, quality control, and CNC machines is preferable. Some employers require candidates to have knowledge of tooling layouts and paperwork. You also need physical stamina for working on your feet for long durations. Other job qualifications include strong communication and organizational skills.
