To become a software consultant, study how to use all the major software programs. Earning an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field trains you in essential software programs. Many employers prefer candidates with a degree, but extensive experience with relevant software programs is more important than a degree. Become certified in the IT world by taking the CompTIA A+, Net+, and Security+ exams. Pass proficiency exams for specific software vendors like Microsoft’s MCST and MCSE (Microsoft Certified Solutions Technician/Expert respectively), or the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) to create a substantial portfolio of your skill set for clients.
