To become a police lieutenant you must first be a police officer. The minimum requirement to become an officer is a high school diploma or GED certificate. You must then attend the police academy in your local city or county. The requirements to gain admission and graduate from the police academy can vary from city to city and state to state. The academy will require you to pass class examinations as well as physical and situational tests. Once you become a police officer, you must work to gain the experience necessary to earn a promotion to lieutenant.
