In order to become a CNC operator (or programmer), must have high school diploma or GED certificate. High school graduates who have completed and excelled in shop and computer programming courses are typically preferred by employers. After earning a high school diploma, you may pursue degree or certificate programs as well. Community colleges and vocational or trade schools offer numerous industry-specific programs which translate directly to CNC programmer roles. These courses include computer-aided manufacturing, production machining techniques, measurements and calculations, and shop practices.
