How can I become a building official?

To become a building official, you need to obtain a high school diploma or GED. Many employers require you to complete an apprenticeship or have a certain number of years working in the construction trades. Some employers may even require an associate degree in construction technology, building inspection, or public administration, with still others requiring a bachelor's degree in addition to the on-the-job experience. Beyond formal education, building officials are required to be certified by the International Code Council. Other skills necessary to complete the job responsibilities of a building official include leadership and communication skills, a good driving record, and strong organizational aptitude.
