How are substitute teachers paid?

Substitute teachers are generally paid a set per-day rate as a 1099 employee. Long-term substitutes (over 40 days) may be offered a short-term contract to cover the medical or maternity leave of a regular teacher, and will be paid on the regular pay cycle of the school.
