How are substitute teachers paid?

Career: Substitute Teacher

Substitute teachers are generally paid a set per-day rate as a 1099 employee. Long-term substitutes (over 40 days) may be offered a short-term contract to cover the medical or maternity leave of a regular teacher, and will be paid on the regular pay cycle of the school. Substitute teachers may be paid on the day they work, weekly, or monthly depending on the school. Substitute teachers rarely receive benefits such as health care, life insurance, or vacation pay.
