Are flight engineers pilots?

Career: Flight Engineer

A flight engineer does not pilot the aircraft. Instead, you assist the pilot by monitoring the aircraft’s instruments and performing maintenance during the flight. You are also responsible for performing a basic inspection of the engine and other mechanical systems before each flight. However, even though you are not piloting the aircraft, a flight engineer must have a commercial pilot’s license and at least 1,500 hours of flying experience. You are evaluated for each type of aircraft you will be flying in to ensure you possess the skills and ability to assume pilot duties if needed.
