USAA is seeking a talented Director, Learning and Development, who will lead a team of dedicated life distribution sales facilitators within USAA Life Company.   This leader will oversee the coordination of all new hire classes across Life, Health and Retirement Income Sales, along with ongoing training for existing distribution specialists.  This role will provide feedback on training material, input on the training content and presentation style for new hire and upskilling classes.

This Director will manage a team in the assessment of learning needs, development, and implementation of learning solutions. Consults with executive clients to develop action plans to close human performance gaps and drives execution leading to positive impact on business results. Leads the identification of development needs, definition of learning requirements, and creation of learning paths. Governs portfolio of learning solutions community in support of USAA strategies and operational plan.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position will be based on the San Antonio, TX., Phoenix, AZ., Tampa, FL, Colorado Springs, CO. or Plano, TX. Campus.  Relocation assistance not available for this position


What you'll do:

  • Leads the planning, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and/or learning activities.

  • Partners with internal and external stakeholders to assess human performance needs to address business issues and develop executable strategies to address program needs and/or drive the development of new programs and activities.

  • Manages a learning and development portfolio of projects and programs, and reports progress and results to the appropriate leadership.

  • Continuously evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of learning and portfolio solutions to ensure outcomes meet USAA's strategic and operational objectives; and discontinues, adds, and modifies learning solutions, as needed.

  • Communicates the portfolio of learning and development solutions with the enterprise to ensure understanding of roles, responsibilities, and benefits.

  • Establishes performance expectations and provides feedback, coaching, and career counseling for direct reports and matrixed team members (project team members).

  • Establishes strategic partnerships with outside vendors and consultants to incorporate industry best practices, trends, processes, and products and services into current learning and development strategies.

  • Manages budgets associated with programs and directs resources to the most critical functions, initiatives, or classes based on capacity and competing priorities.

  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.

  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.

  • 8 years of progressive operational experience to include training in design, development, facilitation and/or deployment.

  • 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to isolate key business problems and influence clients to take appropriate action.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage talent, manage workflow and project execution, engage and inspire, foster open communication, establish plans, manage and improve processes, build relationships, and establish trust.

  • Demonstrated ability to use multiple learning methods and to match the appropriate methods with the subject matter.

  • Experience designing custom learning/ training programs and/or solutions.

  • Advanced knowledge of needs assessment and curriculum design for diverse audiences and on a broad range of topics.

  • Experience implementing aspects of evaluation models to determine training effectiveness.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement lessons learned to improve training program/strategy.

What sets you apart:  

  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner

  • 4 or more years of experience with sales training and coaching on financial service products.

  • 4 or more years of working experience with Life, Health and Annuity products.

  • Direct management experience leading a team of facilitators and/or sales coaches

  • Strong facilitation skills, experience building presentations and ability to articulate complex concepts.

  • Financial service designations to include CFP (Certified Financial Planner), CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), or RICP (Retirement Income Certified Professional) designations

  • Insurance licenses to include Life and Health License or FINRA 7, 66 (63 or 65)

  • Proven track record of coaching others and driving successful behaviors

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $127,310 - $243,340

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
