Job description

The NOC Engineer, Mid monitors, maintains, and supports enterprise network infrastructure from a network operations center to ensure high availability and performance for mission-critical services. This role leads second-level troubleshooting for complex network incidents and executes planned network changes using disciplined procedures and rollback strategies.
Operating at a journeyman level, the engineer analyzes incident and performance trends, contributes to capacity and risk assessments, and helps refine NOC runbooks and standard operating procedures. The position works closely with senior network engineering, security, and operations teams to improve tools, configurations, and processes in a federal IT environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform real-time fault and performance monitoring of network devices, circuits, and services, validating and triaging alerts to distinguish transient issues from systemic problems.
  • Lead advanced troubleshooting for recurring or complex incidents, including packet capture analysis, route and path tracing, and correlation of logs across multiple network domains.
  • Implement and validate standard network changes-such as interface reconfigurations, routing updates, and hardware replacements-following approved change management procedures and rollback plans.
  • Develop and maintain NOC runbooks and operating procedures, translating engineering designs and lessons learned into clear, actionable steps for operations staff.
  • Analyze incident and performance metrics to identify chronic network issues, contributing to problem management, capacity planning, and risk mitigation recommendations.
  • Coordinate NOC activities with incident, change, and configuration management processes, ensuring accurate ticket documentation and CI associations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior NOC engineers on troubleshooting approaches, tool usage, and process adherence.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 4-7 years of experience in network operations, NOC, or network engineering roles with responsibility for leading troubleshooting and executing network changes.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise networking technologies, including routing protocols, switching, VLAN design, VPNs, QoS, and basic security controls across LAN/WAN environments.
  • Proficiency with network management tools and technologies such as Cisco or Juniper platforms and monitoring suites like SolarWinds or similar.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced operational setting, managing multiple concurrent incidents and maintenance activities.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, including clear written documentation of incidents, changes, and resolutions.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance, with U.S. citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience administering Cisco or Juniper-based infrastructures in an operations role, including CLI-driven diagnostics and configuration.
  • Intermediate-level networking certifications such as CCNP or equivalent that validate deeper routing and switching expertise.
  • Familiarity with ITIL practices and experience working within formal incident, change, and configuration management frameworks.
