What Is a Wireless Engineer and How to Become One

Wireless engineers are responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of mobile wireless networks. As a wireless engineer, your chief duties include coordinating with customers to determine what type of network is needed, what kind of budget they have, and any specific requirements or considerations for the project, such as security features or geographic limitations. You then design the system, make any adjustments based on customer feedback, and install it. You must be sure to integrate all software and hardware into the system correctly. After you install the network, you may be asked to train IT specialists or perform routine maintenance on the system.

The qualifications for a career as a wireless engineer include a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, information systems technology, computer science, or a related field. In addition to educational requirements, you should have experience working in IT as part of a network team. Essential skills for the position include mechanical and electrical aptitude, knowledge of network capacities and protocols, and analytical problem-solving. You must also be comfortable working as part of a team of engineers and other IT specialists.
