What Is a Weekend Security Guard and How to Become One

Weekend security guards patrol and protect a property on Saturdays and Sundays. These weekend positions often focus on places that are open over the weekend, such as night clubs, bars, and residential or commercial properties that need additional surveillance over the weekend. Facilities that hire weekend security guards may have weekday shifts as well, but this is not always the case. In this role, you may monitor security cameras, file incident reports, and use existing protocols to determine the best way to handle each situation. Some companies may only want you to contact law enforcement when problems occur while others may expect you to personally intervene to resolve security issues. Weekend security guards may work day or night shifts.

The primary qualifications for getting a weekend job as a security guard are a high school diploma or GED certificate and several months of experience or training for a security role. Companies prefer applicants with professional experience in areas such as law enforcement or the military, but may also consider applicants from other backgrounds. As a general rule, the more valuable a property or its contents are, the more training and experience companies want from their security guards. Other qualifications to obtain a weekend security guard position includes good physical fitness, excellent communication skills, and sound judgment in time-sensitive situations.
