What Is a Websphere Commerce Developer and How to Become One

The duties of a WebSphere Commerce developer include designing and developing both the frontend and backend components of the user experience for various eCommerce projects. As a WebSphere Commerce developer, you build and deliver technical capabilities for a commerce application. Other responsibilities include assisting in gathering the requirements, designing functionality, and completing software upgrades as needed. You provide support to customers, distributors, and dealers by answering questions, testing and integrating applications, and converting data. You are also expected to coordinate with other team members and provide guidance as requested.

The qualifications to become a WebSphere Commerce (WCS) developer include a bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, or a related field, and having a graduate degree is a plus. You should have five years of experience developing eCommerce applications using this type of software, with expertise in a few of the subsystems within WCS such as Order, Catalog, and Marketing. You must have a strong understanding of WCS concepts such as BOD, REST, and commerce modules, and be able to integrate with content management systems. You should also have experience with data and programming models for WCS as well as analytics. You must have excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively on a team.
