A studio engineer records, mixes, and masters the sound that creates songs, spoken word, and movie scores. If your focus is on music recording, you may work with artists and performers in the production of a single track or an album, using specialized microphones and equipment to realize their artistic vision. Other types of audio work sees you using audio technology and software to enhance existing recordings. Your responsibilities include setting up the studio for live recording sessions, which includes placing microphones, amplifiers, and other equipment. Other duties may vary, particularly if you have a specialty; for instance, if you work frequently with film or television production, you might synchronize dialogue and sound effects with video, or create new sound effects from scratch.

A career as a studio engineer requires you have some formal postsecondary education and qualifications, typically at least an associate or bachelor’s degree in audio or sound engineering.
