What Is an SMT Machine Operator?

SMT machine operators are responsible for surface mount technology (SMT) machinery maintenance, operations, and repair. They use the equipment to solder delicate electrical parts. The solder machine connects electrical components as part of an assembly line, also called a printed circuit assembly. An SMT machine operator understands the basic technology of the equipment and its programming, can set up new orders, and troubleshoot as needed. The job duties include inspecting the final products, recording data output, and meeting all daily quota needs.

How to Become a Smt Machine Operator

To become a surface mount technology (SMT) machine operator, you need at least a high school diploma or equivalent, though some employers prefer candidates who have an associate or a bachelor's degree in a technology discipline or other relevant field. Many SMT machine operator duties require in-depth knowledge of circuitry beyond surface mount, so prior roles working with a variety of electronics or in a manufacturing environment may make you stand out from other applicants. Additional qualifications include excellent communication and organizational skills, strong attention to detail, ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, and proficiency with basic computer software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
