A set designer’s duties are focused on creating the overall scenery and set design for films, TV shows, and stage performances. The set designer must work with other artists, like directors and producers, to get an understanding of the concepts needed for production. It’s the set designer’s job to bring together the design according to the script while working with the production team to ensure it is within the budget.

To become a set designer, you need a bachelor's degree preferably in set design, scenic design, or theater. Many employers require that you provide them with a portfolio of your work to review. You can develop your portfolio through internships with production companies, volunteer experiences, or apprenticeship programs with museums or theaters. Your portfolio will not only showcase your skills but also help you build your reputation in the industry. Creativity is a critical element of becoming a set designer and succeeding in this career. Other qualifications include familiarity with design software, knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD), and the ability to read blueprints and draw set sketches.

Job Summary

The Set Designer will be responsible for creating visually appealing and functional sets for our productions. The Set Designer will collaborate closely with the Director, Production Manager, and other members of the production team to create sets that match the vision of the production. In this role, you must be able to work with a variety of materials and budgets and communicate clearly with the rest of the production team.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Director and Production Manager to create a set that supports the narrative of the production
• Create detailed and accurate set designs
• Work within the budget and time constraints of the production
• Oversee the construction of the set and ensure that it is built in accordance with the design
• Supervise the set crew during the installation of the set
• Ensure the safety of the set and the people working on it
• Troubleshoot any problems that arise during the construction of the set

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in theatre design, art, or a related field
• Previous experience in set design for theatre, film, or television
• Knowledge of theatre construction and safety protocols
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment
• Proficient with computer-aided design software
