What Is a Sensor Operator and How to Become One

A sensor operator is a fairly new position with the advent of unmanned aircraft and involves employing airborne sensors, either manually or with the help of a computer, to track and monitor various objects. The air force is one major employer for these types of defense positions. In this role, you assist with flight operations, debriefing, and planning missions. Your main task is to continually monitor these surveillance and weapon systems in a remote setting, ensuring each mission is successful. Other duties include detecting the correct targets using various forms of radar and video.

Getting a job as an airborne sensor operator requires a variety of skills, training, and certifications, starting with over two months of initial training at classes held in Texas. Trainees then move on to an air force base in Nevada to be upgraded to a technician. This is also called 5-level, and the program includes on-the-job training and another class. This portion lasts about 16 months, and students either stay at this base for their first operational assignment or move elsewhere. After this, you may take advanced training to become a craftsman or 7-level operator. At this level, you are eligible for management positions.

A sensor operator in the Air Force has similar duties to any other sensor operator of an RPA. Having pilot experience is beneficial, but it is not required. In this position, you plan missions and complete pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight duties based on your superior officer’s orders. Training is required to help you understand and follow the Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) for AOB assets, both enemy and friendly. You receive and utilize many orders and instructions that you must follow in a prescribed way. There is also a post-flight debriefing with your crew to determine accomplishments and further developments required of each mission.

The job of an RPA sensor operator involves using high-tech equipment to provide surveillance from the sky, including real-time damage assessment during a war. Your responsibilities revolve around using a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA). Your main duties include tracking and monitoring various targeted objects and conducting procedures such as Special Instructions (SPINS), Air Tasking Orders (ATO), Rules of Engagement (ROE), and more. Qualifications required include a high school diploma or GED certificate, normal color vision, 7.5 weeks of basic military training, and being between the ages of 17-39. While flight experience isn’t required, it is beneficial.
