What Is a Robotics Engineer and How to Become One

A robotics engineer designs and often builds robots from their plans and ensures the correct processes are in place for the robot to run properly. They work with their clients to determine costs and design specifications, then they design software systems to control robotic systems; build, configure, and test robots; and automate processes to increase production and precision. Once the robotic system is in place, the robotics engineer helps troubleshoot any problems the clients have with the system.

Robotics engineers spend time in both an office and a lab. Lab hours are spent working on the mechanical parts that make up the components of the robot they are building. Office hours are spent writing papers and working on plans.

A robotics engineer creates robotic systems and robots that are capable of performing tasks humans are unable to or elect not to do. Through automation, their creations help get processes and jobs done more safely, quickly, and efficiently.

Robotics engineers must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Robotics courses usually include training in hydraulics and pneumatics, CADD/CAM systems, integrated systems, numerically controlled systems, logic, and microprocessors. Some colleges offer engineering programs specially designed around robotics. However, most colleges provide engineering courses that also provide the foundational knowledge to work towards a career in robotics. Robotics engineers can also give themselves an advantage over their peers by completing work-study programs to learn experientially while finishing up school.

A master’s degree or doctorate is required to be eligible for upper-level positions within the industry. Because the robotics industry is continuously evolving, robotics engineers must keep up with the latest innovations and technology.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Robotics Engineering or related field
• 5+ years of experience in the robotic engineering field preferred
• Knowledge of robotic system design, programming, and analysis
• Knowledge of embedded systems and controllers
• Able to troubleshoot and debug robotic systems
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
