What Is a Remote Software Tester and How to Become One

As a remote software tester, your job is to provide quality assurance or QA for software. In this role, you work from home to identify bugs, test specific features, and support the documenting of any relevant information the programmers need to know about. Remote software testers often specialize in particular types of software, such as medical systems or video games. The basic duties are the same regardless of industry, but some companies may emphasize factors like reliability, user experience, or challenge above others. In this role, you usually work as part of a larger team and may need to work unusual hours as needed.

The primary qualifications for becoming a remote software tester include a bachelor's degree in a computer-related field and a few years of experience testing software. Some employers may accept several years of testing experience in lieu of a four-year degree. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of this position requires familiarity with web-based applications, the ability to write test documentation, excellent communication skills, and an understanding of the software development lifecycle. Some remote software testers work with sensitive material, such as software for the government or military, and these roles usually require passing a background check and earning a security clearance. To work remotely, you must have access to a reliable internet connection as well as excellent time-management skills.
