What Is a Remote SQL Developer and How to Become One

As a remote SQL developer, you work from home to write code and develop applications. In this virtual position, you may help build databases, manage product lifecycles, add features, and troubleshoot problems with existing code. Many remote SQL developers also test the effectiveness of existing internal processes, create and maintain technical documentation, provide troubleshooting services after-hours and during the weekend, and coordinate with other employees to address any work-related inquiries. While it’s possible to work from home, many remote SQL developers choose to work from a shared office in order to access larger equipment or collaborate with other local employees.

The primary qualifications for becoming a remote SQL developer are a bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology and at least a couple years of experience. Employers prefer applicants who have experience in an office or another physical setting, so many remote SQL developers do this before transferring to a remote position. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of this role requires communication skills, the ability to prioritize multiple projects, and the ability to translate end-user needs into programming objectives. Industry certifications, including those from Microsoft, are not typically required for this role. However, these certifications can help you stand out from other applicants, so having them is a plus.
